I gave my notice in last Friday to work a week's notice, at the time there was an argument over notice period with the most senior manager in the building at that time who I had no option but to present my letter to. I wasn't asked to stay, why I was leaving right down to when my new job started, nothing just that I was resigning at a really inconvenient time to the business and how immoral of me.
As the weekend gone (which I worked) drew to a close, my direct line manager was being super nice and saying stuff like you do what's best for you so much so on Monday, my digital rota showed my last shift as tomorrow and I was removed literally from working the weekend coming and everyone in the workplace told I was leaving.
Today I'm hit with a bombshell that actually I'm required to work this weekend even though it's doubled up shifts (get the impression it's senior manager pulling my line manager's strings to provoke trouble) I don't know how to proceed whether I should get into round 2 with them. I've tried to do the right thing even though my current job was given as zero-hours and had enough of arguing, just want a peaceful exit. Hopefully I'll be able to delete my profiles on the job boards come Monday.
They have had a reference request from new employer to be day's ago (so they are now aware there is definitely another job) which I've learnt they have completely ignored as is their right - my family say I'm stupid to work up to and including Sunday when the very next day I'm starting a more serious role and I could walk into a company who confirm they've never heard from old employer.
I'm thinking of going back to the soon to be ex employer and saying I'll work weekend if I can have the reference in my hand. Yes it's blackmail for blackmail but I see no other way. I tried to get hold of head office but I didn't appreciate head office aren't contactable unless you are physically writing to them so it's to late for that.

It's not blackmail. That seems perfectly reasonable0 -
Don't go into work, they accepted your letter and the dates included within, what can they do if you don't go in, sack you?
The old company have already ignored the reference request and nothing you say or do will change their minds.0 -

One weeks notice given Friday, last day the following Friday.
Nothing to discuss.0 -
Even though they complained about you resigning, provided you gave the required notice then your last day has been agreed and you have no obligation to work for them beyond that date.
On the other hand there's no obligation for an employer to provide a reference. It might be worth having a word with your new employer to check whether this will be a problem or not.0 -

Actually, that's not correct. Notice runs from the *after* it is handed in, so if notice was handed in on Friday and the notice period is one week, the notice expires at the end of the working day on Saturday.https://www.acas.org.uk/givingnotice
So they are entitled to require you to work on Saturday but not on Sunday.
Of course, if they confoimred in writing that you r last day was Friday then you can argue that they cannot withdraw that , but technically that will have been an agreement to short notice, so if it wasn't expressly confirmed in writing it is reasonable for them to wantyou to work your notice, which would include Saturday. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Didn't we discuss all of this about a week ago and decide it was a zero hour contract so the whole concept of notice was meaningless?

That was a week ago. We could be talking about another employer by now.Undervalued wrote: »Didn't we discuss all of this about a week ago and decide it was a zero hour contract so the whole concept of notice was meaningless?

When I handed my notice in to my last 0 hours job I told them I was happy to work 0 hours on as many days as they wanted.0

As a dumpy lady, I worked in hotels in the early 00's uniform wearing without problem - they always got the bigger size.
T Cook I wore a a flooty longer skirt instead of pencil coz I was a larger lady.
I work with many average sized people in the uniform setting and I notice on the rise with them is b.o so perhaps being different makes you take care of yourself in other ways.
Anyway looking forward to dumping the size 20/22 jacket (from Sainsbo) come a couple of days. (latest place was a supply your own uniform)
It was said a hotel reception only employs glamour puss but I didn't let it put me off.
Are you leaving Sainsburys or did you just buy the jacket from there? If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
