Switching off room theromstats

Hi,

Our house has two thermostats- one controls the living room radiator and the other controls every other radiator in the house. If I only switch the living room control on, does this save money when compared to switching both on? I'm unsure if it does because the boiler is still having to run even with just one thermostat on.

A lot will depend on how the system is configured. If the lounge stat only heat the lounge and nowhere else when the external stat is off then the boiler wont have to produces as much heat and will therefore use less gas.

No one can guess how your system is wired on configured so you really have to do your own tests to see what happens when each stat is turned on and off

If the system is plumbed as two independent zones, then yes, running just a zone with one radiator will use less gas to heat than running all the radiators - assuming you keep the living room door closed!


But assuming you don't want to freeze in the rest of the house, it might be an idea to set the living room at a higher temperature to keep you toasty warm in there whilst having the other thermostat set a little lower.
