BG Smart meter with Eon?

I got a BG smart meter fitted in Dec 2016 then left them and went to Bulb and now the IHD no longer works, as expected, though I can still use it to get meter readings.


I am now switching to Eon from Bulb.


Will my IHD start working again or will Eon have to fit a new smart meter?

    It's highly unlikely that it will work with Eon or anyone else for that matter. TBH it probably wouldn't work if you went back to BG either

    Just do what you want to do and go with whoever you want and let the energy companies worry about what will work and what wont.

    It will probably get sorted out eventually, either by an upgrade to your existing meter or with a replacement but there really is more to life than worrying about smart meters

    Hello st999 and sorry for the late reply - I missed your post.

    Many thanks for your interest in joining us. It sounds like you've a SMETS1 smart meter. As you know, these meters lose their smart features following a change of supplier and revert to a classic 'dumb' meter. Initially, your meter and the In Home Display (IHD) will remain as they are now after a switch to us.

    We're currently trialling upgrades to these meters to restore their smart features so they can be managed in the same way as SMETS2. This includes meters fitted by other suppliers and now supplied by us.

    There are some early installations where this won't be possible. These are mainly smart meters fitted from 2014 and before. As your meter was fitted in 2016, I suspect it will be okay for the upgrade. If it isn't, we'll offer to fit a new SMETS2 meter.

    Upgrades will be carried out remotely so there'll be no need to visit your home. Once done, the IHD will be updated as part of making the meter smart again. The trial is at an advanced stage and we're looking to complete the migration by December 2020.
