Can I copy HDD camcorder contents to external HDD without PC?

Hi,

We are trying to find an answer to this question and don't know where to look.

We got Sony HDD camcorder for you wedding. It is great and has a generous hard drive. However, we are going on our honeymoon in two weeks to New Zealand nad were thinking that it would be nice to have a way to move the contents of the camcorder HDD to free up the space while we are away. We thought about getting an external HDD (one of the 'pocket' sized ones), but have no idea if we would be able to copy the stuff over without PC. These small HDDs usually get power from PC, so would it work if I just connected it to the camcorder?

I understand how would I copy when I have a PC in between camcorder and HDD, but how would I do without? There is an option in the menu of camcorder to copy to HDD or tu burn a DVD, but I haven't tried them yet!!!!

Any help of how could we free up the space on camcorder while on holiday would be helpful!!!!

Have you checked the manual, does it say you can copy directly over to a HDD in a certain format without a PC?

You might find someone what knows here: https://www.avforums.com

As I understand it, the Sony should let you export/copy your movie files to a laptop (bizarre if it doesn't!). However, as is usual with Sony, their MP4 files are slightly different to standard MP4's and so to view/edit them you would require a plug-in for whatever editing software you choose to use.

Sony may provide this with the camera (I don't own one), otherwise a quick search will no doubt provide the right codecs.

    Enjoy NZ!

Sorry, just re-read your post where you say 'without' a PC.

Can't see how this would work unless you have a USB-host based HD and the Sony would need the menu option to perform the copy.
