MacBook Pro 2012 Uni Body Transfer MacBook Air/Pro 2019

Hey there guys I have MacBook Pro 2012 unibody bought March 2013 £999

500GB HDD (Upgraded to 1TB SSD about 3 years ago £380) (Included battery change and file transfer at local computer shop)
Broke Screen (Few years ago) (£100 Local computer shop)
Batter died (Needs new one)

I am looking to buy a 1TB SSD MacBook Air or MacBook Pro can’t decide what to get yet.

Will use it for ITunes YouTube Web Browsing Football Manager Cities in Motion Sim City 4 Etc.

So what’s the cheapest way (Cable only) to transfer my Music (Got about 13,000 songs) Pictures and Documents to MacBook Air/Pro 2019 MacBook Pro has FireWire 800 USB 2.0/3.0 and Ethernet.

Don’t really wanna be spending £70-£100 on cables to do it.

will Ethernet to USB-C work?

  • Connect an external HDD to your existing machine and allow Time Machine to run a full back up.

Now eject your external HDD and unplug it from your existing machine.

When you get your new MacBook plug in your external HDD BEFORE you switch the new machine on for the first time.

As part of the initialisation/first boot process the MacBook will ask if you want to transfer from the HDD/Time Machine.

Just say yes and let the MacBook get on with it.

Thanks mate I do have portable 1TB SSD (PS4) 2TB SSD (Xbox one) so could use one of them..

Will using a Thunderbolt 2 cable connected to thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adaptor work?
  • Should do but I always use a USB, personal choice.

So long as the Mac recognises the HDD when you plug it in that is all you need to worry about.

Pro it is then. I wouldn't want to use games on integrated graphics.

Hold on, you're not already making backups? With Time Machine? If not, do that, as Navigator123 says. What if something goes wrong?! You might need to buy a backup drive, any the right size will do. FireWire left us a long time ago.
If you do Time Machine, you can restore it all to your new computer.
