Failed Economy Energy administrators chasing debts

We had a torrid experience with Economy Energy having been with them for just over a year. They never gave any accurate account of what we owed and I now have no idea what was paid in that times nor what we actually used.

Having transferred over to Ovo in January our current energy usage and payments are relatively straight forward.

But this morning the administrators for Economy sent us a demand for £450 based on monies owed with a 7 day deadline before its sent to debt collectors.

I don’t doubt we owe some money to the failed utility supplier, but I have no idea if £450 is anywhere near the right amount plus we are not able to afford this payment right now.

Any suggestions as to how we approach this?

I’m minded to request a full breakdown of all payments and meter readings we had while using them and then to request a long term payment plan if this number seems accurate.

Surely you have the opening reading from Ovo, the opening reading from Economy / closing reading from the previous supplier and records of payments made ? With this information it will be a fairly simple calculation. They are under no obligation to accept a payment plan for any monies owed, they are simply administrators winding up a company so do tend to be rather ruthless (cynical hat on) as most of the money they collect will go to fund the administration.

This subject comes up time and time again and just re-enforces the message that you must keep your own records. It is not difficult to do, I could tell you exactly how my energy account stands in about 2 minutes and can give you my meter readings back to 2002, and saves a lot of grief.
  • Hurry up and pay, they owe me about £450 !!
  • Log in to your EE account, readings are still there. OVO start reading minus EE start reading = what you owe.
