Now the other driver has said he has 'taken advice' and thinks it is 50/50 and that we should pay for our own repairs! He is happy to go through insurance, but would prefer not to due to his age.
I think his advice is right. Poor observation by both of you.

OP, I'd let it go myself. (although my car is old and has little value). Difficult to prove either way, and would end up costing you much more if you go through insurer.
In relation to reversing into supermarket spaces, I rarely do unless I'm parking with a path to the back. Mainly because my shopping goes into the boot, and it's difficult to get a trolley round the back if you have reversed in and there's no walkway. It's just bad luck if two people reverse out at the same time IMO. We all have to rely on all drivers (and pedestrians) being observant in supermarket car parks, and hope for the best.

So leave the trolley at the front of the car, and walk between the two cars with each bag.

Make sure you don't park RIGHT to the back of the bay - you only need leave a little bit, enough to get the boot open and load it.

It's not bad luck if they collide. It's lack of effective observation by both parties.

Good grief. A question about insurance liability turns into a lecture about which way to point your vehicle when you are parking.

This is the most infuriating forum.

FWIW I think this would go 50/50 anyway if it went to insurance, but I wouldn't risk not telling the insurance company.

me personally, I would txt the other driver and say you are going through insurance, if he wants to bail on £130 then let his premium go through the roof. I would take the hit on my insurance for the satisfaction.

It seems reasonable to point out the correct way to park: it may prevent the OP repeating his unfortunate experience.
    I agree about 50/50.

Why would his premium go through the roof after such a minor claim?

'Cause he's a young driver with a Corsa? That's why he didn't want to go to insurance at first.
I need to think of something new here...

Most of the replies here have nothing to do with the OPs question.

The answer to which is, phone the insurance company. What other answer could it be?
