Working out Capital Gains from shares

    And, an obvious (to me) point, but maybe one to mention, depending on how many shares you wish to sell, you don't actually HAVE to know how much capital gain you have made, as long as you are SURE you have made less than the £12K allowance. Meaning if you know AT LEAST how much something cost, you can make sure you keep your capital gain under £12K based on that figure. It means you can be confident you are not breaking the law, but will have to find all the relevant costs if you happen to be investigated by HMRC.
