Website took money without authorisation

I subscribed a 2 or 3 years ago to a website called ADVFN to their hotlist and paid with my debit card.
After a year, my card had expired so it didnt auto renew the subscription (I didnt want to anyway, so it was fine)

On checking my bank statements I noticed a charge of £98 in July this year, from ADVFN. I certainly didnt authorise it, as dont use their site anymore, do i have any way of getting the money back?

Ive no idea how they managed to even take it, as the card i paid with 2 or 3 years ago is long expired???

If you signed up to a subscription service with your card details it will be a continuous payment authority. Even when your bank card changes, these continuous payments can still be processed. If you no longer wished to use the service you should have cancelled. All you can do is ask nicely if they would consider refunding as you haven't used the service.

I wish I had a pound for each time I heard that line.:rotfl:
Speak to your bank and get it stopped going forward. Sadly unless you can come up with a date you did cancel ;) you have lost the money already taken.
I have known CPA to continue for many years after a card has expired... Its all in the card regulations that they are allowed to do it. As well as reporting a card as lost stolen they can request the new card details from Visa Account updater. I take it mastercard has something that works in he same way.

No, he shouldn't speak to his bank to get it stopped, he should cancel the subscription.

    You didn't.

No I'm not psychic and neither do I work for them but the fact that you're posting that guarantees you didn't. Contact them now and cancel it. It's entirely down to their goodwill whether they'll refund or not, on any of the projects that I've worked on you wouldn't get anything back as it's entirely your responsibility to cancel. Whether you use the service or not is immaterial.

But he should speak to his bank after cancelling the subscription and ask them to cancel the payments and to block any further payments just in case the company concerned attempt to take more money.
