Housing Benefit claim

I moved into my rented property on the 14th October and made a claim for housing benefit from that date. I currently receive universal credit.

When I moved in I had to pay out 1 months rent upfront and £200 deposit.

Will I get this months rent paid back to me because I am really struggling now with having to set up a new home and all the items it requires.

As you're claiming UC you won't be able to claim for housing benefit. You'll be able to claim for the housing element of UC, which will be paid monthly as part of your UC amount.

How much housing element you're entitled to will depend on your circumstances. Are you renting privately of from housing association? Do you live alone? are you under or over 35?

If you're renting privately then you'll need your tenancy agreement to be able to claim this.

You won't be able to claim for the month's rent upfront or the £200 deposit/bond.

As poppy says you cannot claim housing benefit. You need to provide DWP details of your tenancy so they can recalculate your UC entitlement. If you rent privately the amount of help you can get is limited by the Local Housing Allowance for your post code https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/ if you are less than 35 you are only allowed the shared room rate (unless you get a disability benefit).

The allowable help will be be applied to the whole of your monthly assessment period in which the start date of your tenancy falls.

As others have said you cannot claim Housing benefit. I think the only exception to this is if it's emergency/ temporary accommodation.

Good point, supported accommodation is also still covered by HB.
