Switching gas supplier on pre pay

Hi all
I remember something from a while ago that if you had prepayment meters installed that you where not allowed to switch supplier! Is this correct?

Thanks

    No, that is incorrect. You can switch with a PPM as long as if any debt you are repaying is less than £500. If your debt is less than £500 the new supplier may take on your debt.

    What is PPM?
    I have just moved into the property this weekend; however the land lord has told me the the last tenent was in debit with them and the meter is set at a pay back rate of something or the other. why £500?

    Sounds like you haven't registered with your gas supplier ! If so, send them a meter reading PDQ because you'll be on a rip-off deemed tariff as well as paying the previous tenant's debt.

    PPM = Pre-Payment Meter

    contact supplier , they will send new key / card that will reset it to zero
  • I dont like the supplier I am with, do I need to register with my current supplier first or can I switch before hand?

    There are two ways your Elec/Gas can be supplied
    1) Directly from a licensed supplier - If you move into a dwelling you must register with that supplier, and if it's a Pre Payment Meter the supplier will send you a new top-up card that is individual to you, and any debt left by the previous tenant is cancelled

    2) The energy supply meters are in Landlords name and he has fitted his own PAYGO meter/s to collect money for the energy consumed by your flat.
    Just as on a licensed suppliers meter, you are not responsible for the previous tenants debt
  • So I can still switch right, without contacting the current gas supplier and not pick up last tenents bill

    You MUST register with the existing supplier first - then you won't pick up the outstanding debt.
    Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

    Yes because you are automatically placed on a deemed contract with the existing supplier when you move in (this is to stop any problems with supplies being switched off). The sooner you register with the current supplier, the quicker you will be able to then switch to another. If you try to switch without registering, you'll likely end up with billing problems.

    If you haven't already done so, take meter readings (and possibly take photos of the meters showing the readings) so that you've got proof and don't hit any problems with that previous tenants debt.
