I'm having trouble getting a credit card as I have no creidit history except my failure to pay a BT bill around a year ago for £300.
Also I am not on the electoral role.
My income is just from the Student Loans Company as I am currently studying at Uni, but was also refused a O/Draft by Natwest when I applied.
I really just want any credit card so that I could use it to increase my credit history.
Really for for some advice on this.
Many thanks!!

I just applied and got a Capital One Basic card. The AER is very high but its good to help build your credit. Also check out any cards that have a high AER, they are easier to get.0

Why? Lenders score us differently, but everyone's credit rating improves no end once registered.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
Hi Swerve......
You aint going anywhere without being on electoral role,
Also, have you checked your files to see exactly whats on them? Is the BT debt there?.....
I would do both these things and then depending apply for Cap 1, Vanquis or Aqua cards. They all do the same thing. High APR but they cant take on the people the mainstream lenders wont.0 -
Electoral role is a must.
Barclaycard and Capital One both have basic credit cards designed for people with poor/no credit history. The rates are shocking. The idea is try and get one of those, use it, pay if off in full every month (you really don't want to go down the interest route with these cards) and then hopefully in in 6-12 months get something better.
Maybe get your credit report to see if anything negative is on there or something that is not you.0 -
Thanks for the great advice, just been looking at the options regarding registering on the electoral role and I see you can 'hide' your details from the public version so that only the government/future creditors can see the full details.
I have always feared registering on it in case any landlords from a long time back track me down re:rent arrears :-/0 -
Swerve..................
You realy need to check you credit file............0 -
Thanks, could you expand a little as to why please?
Thank you.0 -
Im guessing that if you have never registered on the electoral role then im guessing you havent thought much about credit files......
Your landlord was chasing you for rent. Could he have obtained a CCJ against you?..... Might happen and if you never check your file you will never know.
You realy need to go back to basics as regards credit, you need to:
a: Get on the Electoral Role
b: Wait for a few months for you details to register
c: Obtain a storecard/Cap 1/Aqua/Vanquis
d: Use it for 6 months
e: Try and obtain a LOB card as opposed to 0% as you wont be able to get this.
f: Try for overdrafts and other things during the next 3 years....
g: Eventually 3 years have passed and you will have access to 0% deals at decent limits and all the other nice things that come with a good rating....
I cant help thinking your looking for a quick fix.... There aint one mate and iv been there before, iv been working on my credit file for 2 and a bit years and things are starting to shape up nicely..... It has taken 2 and a bit years though........
Hope this helps!0
