Lose your keys, then take out insurance?

If I've lost my car keys, can I take out insurance now and claim, how would that work?

It would work by you committing fraud.

Not a great idea, generally speaking.

I kind of assumed that but can you expand. So I could take out insurance and lose my keys the next day and claim, but not claim for keys already lost?

Insurance industry uses lie detector software on their call centres now.

If it's a true claim then you will be fine

In theory yes although some policies exclude key cover or an excess might make it easier and cheaper to get a locksmith and a new set of lock and keys.

Some policies have things that can't be claimed in the first X number of days too.

We called a local company and they bought out a new key, next day for £120.

Quite a number of people lie to insurers when making claims.

So they have become good at investigating claims - they'll interview you, check that what you say is true, etc.

Fraud teams are often made up of ex-police officers. So they might have a lot of experience in spotting when people are lying, and investigating to find out the truth.

(And if they find out you've been lying, they will add your name to a fraud database that's shared with other insurers. Or they might encourage the police to prosecute you.)

Check your car insurance to see if you are already covered.

op you've lost your car keys without potential insurance, learn from the mistake and don't try and make it some one else's problem

Fraud affects everyone. premiums rise collectively

if you cant afford to pay replacement keys, should you be driving?

Best thing to do is to call an insurance company and take out a policy. Be sure to declare the loss that you have suffered. You should mention to them that, although the loss occurred prior to the policy being live, you would like to make a claim once the policy is active.

Let us know how you get on.

    Best of luck

Sounds a great idea; I wonder why no-one else has thought of it ?
