Switched from NPower. owed £879!

The transfer away from NPower to another provider completed mid october. I supplied elec and gas reading to the new provider at the time. Loging into my NPower account i am able to see the account summary and that it has been closed on the 15th october.
In large print in the middle of the screen
"Your current balance £879.92"
  • How is this a reasonable balance to continue over payments for balancing out the seasons?
  • How do I get this back, now?
  • Don't use NPower

Is this owed as you owe them £879 or they owe you £879?

You had been giving NPower regular readings when you were with them I presume, in addition to the one you gave to the new provider?

If this is what they owe you this suggests your direct debit has been far too high for far too long, either that or all your readings were over estimated and they thought you were using far more than you were...

well yeah, i had the account for years and evidently they took unreasonable over payments. meter reading werent regular but i did give at least a few each year online. the projected bill for the next year, £720.74‬ printed on my last bill, is less than they owe me - which is £879.

This is why you should give regular meter readings on a regular basis and keep an eye on your own account so that you avoid building up big debts or credits.

    Absolutely. cant argue with that.

Taking more than a year in over payments is still completely unreasonable.

I will set up some kind of alert on my mobile phone to submit monthly readings

You switched mid-October? It's only the 25th now. Give them a chance!

I received my credit from nPower within 10 days when I switched 3 months ago but that is fairly exceptional, I think... (Still waiting for my £25, MSE)

I believe they have 8 weeks to refund any credit but, other than that I might have read that on here somewhere, I don't know where I got that from so apologies if I am wrong.

I suggest you call them and ask, politely, when they might get around to refunding your money. Yes, it is yours but it is not instant, like going into a shop; they gave you credit, after all, unless you were on a pre-payment meter.

I found, with nPower, you really were treated the way you treated them, most of the time; admittedly, some of their customer service reps are awful but that is true of any company.

I am sure you will receive your due in fairly short order and, probably, quicker if you give them a call and use a little charm; it can work wonders.

Sorry but if your current balance is stated as such, then you owe them.
If they owed you they would say your current credit balance is ...£

Is there a minus sign against the figure, thats a sign of a credit balance

Did it not occur to you at any point in the "years" you were with nPower, anything along the lines of "I'm paying them £150 a month (or whatever) yet my bills are only £200 a quarter (or whatever), perhaps I should ask for some of it back/reduce my payments"?

How do you not notice a credit of nearly £900?
This latest £720.74, what time period does that cover? Presumably that's a year's worth of energy?

    Hello data7of9,

    thank you for your review.

It is important to provide regular meter readings so your account, usage and payments can be kept up to to date and be as accurate as possible.

Have you received your final bill from us? If not the credit could be a build up of your direct payments which will be off-set against your charges once he final bill is produced. It can take the new supplier up to 28 days to confirm and send us the meter reading they are opening your account with them on, so we can in turn close your account to the same reading.

One of the team will be happy to look into this further for you if you can drop us an email to the address on our profile page.

    Thanks, Carmel :)
