all the lights come on but then nothing at all not even a wirring sound, just silence h

Yes it would because a push start won't involve the starter motor, you will then be half way towards finding the problem.

A light car should be fairly easy to push start, ignition on, get up a bit of speed select 2nd gear and release clutch gently.

You can't rely on battery voltage. Amps are more important for starting the car, so first job is a proper battery test. You can't test the starter unless you know the battery is healthy.

True, try using jump leads from your car to hers before you condemn the starter
If it starts it's the battery, often happens this time of year, colder dark days, lights etc on

Sounds more like the battery is knackered rather than the starter motor. Could be the original battery that has finally given up as mine did after 10 years.

If it was the starter you would expect to hear a click as the starter solenoid switched current to the starter.

Why what does leaving it in gear do?

It it a new one where you have to have your foot on the clutch or something?

Ours is a 2008 so doesn't have that

Mine was older model MMT, so has to be in neutral. If you inadvertently switch off in drive you can't start the car. You then need to put your foot on the brake, put it into neutral, then foot on brake again and you can turn the key to start it. As I said, probably not the situation here but I've done it once or twice.

    Battery, then.

It's providing voltage with no load, but simply failing when there's load.

No great surprise - the first cold snap is when they usually die.
