Extension Rules

Hi everyone, we live in a semi-detatched extended house and our neighbours are currently extending their property too. I'm a little concerned that the property may be a double extension which comes right up to ours and extends out and blocks a lot of the bedroom window light. However, would that be permitted? Best way to describe is in diagram form, which I've done below.

Two storey extensions up to 3 metres deep can be built on the back of the house without planning permission. How deep is the extension? There's further restrictions that would make it need planning permission so as above, Google and check there's nothing about it that would make it require planning permission.
Have you checked your council's planning portal for planning applications? It might be that they've got planning permission for something bigger anyway.
Have you asked them whether it's going to be a single-storey or two-storey extension?0 -
Don't expect much from objecting on the grounds of losing a bit of natural light through a window.
A block of flats I know of currently have views across the river valley. A scrap of land in front has had a garage demolished, and they are building a five storey carbuncle to replace it. the main wall is going to be less than a metre from the windows & juliet balconies of the existing block of flats. The view out of the window will now be a dreary brick wall with zero natural light. Plenty of objections were raised, but planning was still granted.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

I think the scenario in your diagrams is an extremely common one and the sort of thing that happens even on a single property with a side return.
You are really asking if there is a 'right to light' established which the neighbour's extension would affect, and that's a technical question we can't answer. However, if the houses are less than 20 years old, there won't be.0
