Selling SORN vehicle

I am selling an old car that is SORN. I have no insurance for the car.

When someone comes to view & test drive the car, I assume I will need to tax the car, which is fine.

I assume I also need to verify that they are insured to drive the car i.e. they have fully comprehensive insurance.

Is it OK for my to tax the car (remove SORN status) but not have personal insurance for the car?

I don't need insurance as I will not be driving it, and it is parked off the road. But perhaps I am still legally required to have insurance if the car is taxed?

Comments

  • I would simply (take a lose) tell the prospective buyer sold as seen , must be towed or trade plates OR

upon filling in v5 (do online*) THEY should tax it and sort insurance for drive home

    * online wull give you timed and dated conformation email , in case the vehicle is "pinged"

A vehicle that is not SORNd must be taxed and insured.

It is unlikely any one testdriving it would have insurance anyway, most "driving other vehicles" cover requires the other vehicle to have insurance already, although there are a few companies that don't require it.

I can't get insurance for the car, as I don't have a driving license. I inherited the car.

Ok, so it sounds like they won't be able to test drive it before making the decision to purchase it. I assume this results in a cheaper selling price (i.e. "take a loss")
  • ...and don't forget you will get the blame if it is caught on the road while SORN'd; not the test driver.

You might be better off selling to a trader in these circumstances as they can drive it on trade plates.

Surely though, if you inherited it, it's all "profit", you won't take a loss. You just won't realise as much as you'd hoped.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Yeah of course. It was the other poster who referred to it as taking a loss. Selling the car without allowing a test drive entitles the buyer to a discount, I think.

Yes or you can google local equivalents and then check reviews, you might get a better deal then with WBAC.
