  • Pollycat: you need access to Athens via your University or pay the College for a copy of the article.
Please note this is not advice, it’s providing access to the latest research based evidence.

    Really?
I'm not sure how many posters on here would have access through their University.
So you expect them to pay to verify your statement or take your advice at face value?
You're just some random stranger on t'interweb.
And that is exactly why MSE rules say do not give medical advice.

Sorry but tea tree oil is not advisable any more.
The latest evidence is oxidation of TTO can result in a bleach-like compound running the risk of burns and bacterial infection.
    This ^^^^ is advice.

And you are not providing access to anything.
  • The safety of use of TTO in practice has been raised by many bodies, such as the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment: http://www.bfr.bund.de/cm/349/use_of_undiluted_tea_tree_oil_as_a_cosmetic.pdf)
From the above: "Concentrated tea-tree oil has been classified as harmful according to the self-classification of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and is labelled with R-phrases R 22 (harmful if swallowed) R 38 (irritating to skin) and R 65 (may cause lung damage if swallowed) as well as the symbol Xn (harmful) (IFRA Labelling Manual 1, 2001).
These indications of health hazards are also part of the safety data sheets of raw material suppliers....."

The EU Scientific Committee also expressed serious concerns about the safety of TTO in products: http://ec.europa.eu/health/ph_risk/committees/04_sccp/docs/sccp_o_00c.pdf)
    The conclusion:
"The sparse data available suggest that the use of undiluted Tea Tree Oil as a commercial product is not safe. The safety dossier of Tea Tree Oil is incomplete. The stability of Tea Tree Oil in cosmetic formulations is questionable. A standardized method for the specification of Tea Tree Oil is needed. Industry should develop an analytical testing method based on typical degradation products to ensure and control the stability of the material. Skin and eye irritation was not assessed by adequate methods. There are relevant data gaps with regard to subchronic toxicity, percutaneous absorption, enotoxicity/carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity."

Well, if anyone takes the time to read either of those 2 papers...I'll reiterate:
It is very specifically and strictly not for the discussion of what to do in the event of certain medical problems. Please do not ask questions about this.
Even though medically-qualified people sometimes visit these forums, we would ask them to refrain from answering specific medical questions. This leaves us open to somebody coming on, pretending to be a doctor when they're not, and giving advice.

The only advice that is appropriate is:
If you have a medical problem, please use NHS Direct or go to your doctor.
This ^^^^ is also from the link in my post.
It is written in MSE rules.
    Specifically.

The intention of my post pointing out that the post was 3 months old was to alert other posters that it possibly wasn't worth giving advice as the OP hadn't returned to the thread.

Posts like mine are common on forums to warn people they may be wasting their time on old threads.
Of course, there is nothing to stop them wasting their time if they wish.

For a few femto seconds (look it up) I thought you were being altruistic.
    My mistake obviously.
