Participant Information
What is this study about?
This is an invitation to take part in a research study that explores how people cope with significant challenges in their lives and the extent to which these challenges might causes negative consequences for mental health, including suicidal thoughts. We are interested in understanding the risk factors that may lead to mental health challenges and the protective factors involved in supporting people. Before you decide if you wish to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully.
What does this study involve?
If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a demographic information sheet that will collect some information about you (e.g., age, gender). You will then be asked to complete a number of questions that ask about whether you have experienced any negative thoughts and feelings in the past year, including the extent to which you have experienced symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts. We will also ask you questions about how you typically try to cope with challenges. Some questions will ask how you cope with challenging experiences and or memories related to stressful life events once you face them and now and whether you have identified any positive changes to your personality or lifestyle related to these stressful events.
The whole procedure will last approximately 20-30 minutes. We would like to invite you to answer all questions as honestly as possible. There are no right or wrong answers, so answer intuitively and do not spend too much time pondering. You do not have to answer any question if you do not wish to answer.
Who is eligible to participate?
You do not need to experience mental health issues to take part. Eligible participants must meet the following criterion:
a) Aged 18 or older.
Do you have to participate?
Please note that the questions will cover some sensitive topics, such as the extent to which you have thought about suicide as a result of your experiences. However, participation in this study is totally voluntary and you are under no obligation to take part. You are free to withdraw at any point before, during or after the study with no penalty. If you decide you wish to withdraw your data, please email the named researcher on the email given above stating your unique participant ID you will write at the beginning.
You will be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 16 Amazon gift cards (£20).
How will my data be used and stored?
You do not provide your name at any point of the research however you will be asked to provide your email address in order to enter the prize draw. This information will be collected through different survey which is not linked to your survey responses. Other information which is collected about you during the course of the research (e.g., age) is strictly confidential and used for research purposes only. Only the research team will have access to the data and at will be stored in compliance with the Data Protection Act.
