Which home insurers charge little or nothing for cancelling within first 14 days?

I exchange contracts on a house tomorrow, so I need to take out buildings insurance today. For various reasons, I think there's a good chance that I'll want to cancel during the initial 14-day cooling-off period and go with a different insurer.

Could anyone please tell me which insurers have a low, or no, charge for cancelling within the first 14 days? Most T&Cs I've read so far say "we will charge an admin fee shown in your schedule", but that seems to be chicken and egg because I won't have the schedule till I've bought the insurance.

  • I'll spare you the obvious question of why don't you simply go to your preferred provider in the first place and provide the following observations from my own experience today (looking at renewal for Contents cover and getting quotes via CTM).

Existing cover with LLoyds - I noticed the documents seemed to suggest a full refund during the first 14 days with no admin charge so might be worth a closer look.

I also noticed that the "more details" tab on CTM tells you the cancellation fee for outside the cooling off period and warns that fees could also apply during that period. Co-op shows no fees for cancelling outside the 14 days so seems a fair assumption there will be non during that time. May be other firms in that boat.
