Are they able to do anything else in regards to my account after assuring me that if a refund is sent things will be sorted?

I would expect that you have been flagged into their credit team, unless they are already aware of your account. Due to the lack of funds and clearly struggling to make ends meet.

Given you were given £45. What happened to that? Did you spend it, and not give it to your friend? Give it to your friend, who had the item you were selling? So why did they not give it back to you?

    Bottom line.
So they could still close your account if you keep straying over/close to your limits.

I have called them back today as due to being called into work I’ve been unable to get into a branch yet. I am going in tomorrow as they are open until 1pm. I am more concerned about the fact that the man on the phone seemed to be rather condescending and accused me of this being a scam! I understand there are procedures to follow but the questioning was rather heavy although he did say if I am to refund the money by putting it back into my account this “should” be sorted.

It's kind of academic really. It's not like you have an option is it? You have to put your account back into credit sooner rather than later. You're somewhat at the mercy of your bank as to what they decide to do subsequently.

Try looking at it from the buyer's perspective: They paid for something online: the seller then said they weren't going to send it and wouldn't refund their money immediately. If that happened to me I'd be smelling eau-de-scam and requesting a cashback faster than sugar off a shovel.

And try looking at it from the bank's perspective: You've had a payment made into your account, albeit a small one, and the buyer has requested a cashback - meanwhile you've hoovered your account out to the extent that there aren't even sufficient fumes left in it to make a small cashback refund.

You've handled this very badly. You should have funded your account and repaid the buyer immediately - by pawning your cat or Grandmother if necessary.

  • Was going in to work a better idea than risking a fraud market in your file, having all accounts closed, and being unable to access credit for many years?

You have treated your buyer appallingly, the bank has seemingly offered you an opportunity to make everything good, and you are messing them around now too.

You need to get the money paid in, and not do anything so foolish in the future.

Bank should close ops account asap, they clearly are in no rush to refund but would rather spend time on here. Disgraceful behavior.

  • Cough up the money and don't do it again, OP. Don't receive money "for a friend", tell the lazy so and so to sort out the transaction for themselves. If you're going to sell items then ideally do it on a regulated marketplace like eBay or Amazon. Your finances must be in poor health if your account has less than £45 in it, but that's an issue for another thread.

Just put the situation right and hope the bank will view this as a one-off malarkey.

...yet not give any answers to the questions asked, which might have achieved better responses and guidance !

With a risk of sounding harsh, but not having £45 to your name and not being able to get hold of such sum despite the risk of getting fraud marker on your credit file warrants some condescension. Everything in your behaviour and actions so far points towards you being a scammer as far as the bank is concerned, so why are you surprised the bank staff are acting as if you are?

According to your OP, they gave you "until tomorrow" (24.10) to come to a branch and sort it out. Given that you are way past that date and still haven't sorted it, who knows what they will decide to do next. Best case, they will keep your account frozen until you settle the amount. Worst case is they close your account, put a CIFAS marker on your credit file so you won't be able to get any credit and likely bank account in your name for the foreseeable future and refer you to the police for running a scam.
