Bulb; wrong rates on MSE

I have been investigating the email from Cheap Energy Club saying I could save £60 a year. According to my calculations, with the best deal available, I could only save 68 pence. On further investigation, I found the tarriff rates the C E C were using to calculate the saving were different from the ones I was using, so I checked on my latest bill and found the figures I was using were correct.

p/kWh Standing Charge
Gas 3.26 19.47
Electricity 12.6 19.47

So the saving of 68p is correct.

  • Have you fallen into the VAT trap.
The tariff rate on your bill does not include VAT, it is added on at the end. Perhaps the CEC rates included VAT?
  • Hi,

and the CEC compares against the standard rate which you will be on when fixed rate ends.

MSE claim Bulb are the cheapest supplier if you are an average user on prepayment meters,...

    *NOTE*
They are only cheaper if it's a Standard Pre-Pay meter.
If you're on a pre-paid Smart meter Bulb won't let you switch to this tarriff...

Ditto - I had the last-day warning email through from the MSE Cheap Energy Club and found that the recommendation I would have been most likely to switch to based on cost savings and CS (Pure Planet) has in fact higher standing charges and unit energy costs than Bulb Vari-Fair.

Unless rivals have mysterious ways of making the same energy go further? ;)

No contact email address to notify the powers at MSE Towers so its regrettable that I'm having to post on the forum. Its probably a simple fix on a programme, but how many people are switching without looking into the detail I wonder?

    Same question to you

Which supply region are you in?
Or what is the first part of your postcode?

Plus, what is your anticipated annual usage in kWh that you have provided the CEC?

Did you take into account the possible £55 cashback available from MSE?
(or have you set your filters to ignore cashback when calculating savings)

"how many people are switching without looking into the detail I wonder?", you asked.
I least one, I suspect (no names mentioned ;))
All factored in. I've invested a hefty wedge into making my home more energy efficient this year, so have been careful to look at the standing charges. In the quote given, the difference in standing charge alone would have swallowed up any cashback, and the unit cost of gas and electricity was higher.

So overall the tool - which has my address details you alluded to - could have lead me to switch and cost me in the process.
