PayPal Credit Defaults - WARNING

TLDR: Bankrupt June 2016, discharged June 2017 and PayPal Credit are still reporting the same default to my credit file - I am now going to war

A slightly longer version of events, as above, declare bankrupt and discharged via a DRO. A debt relief order does not come with a discharge certificate, nor can one be requested; you are simply discharged from the listed debts, the accounts in question require marking as "settled" and noted as amount owing "zero". The normal rule of the last default recorded should be the date of your bankruptcy petition and the account marked as settle / zero should be no longer than a year after this date.

Most creditors are responding to the prodding and poking of complaints and information controller reports however PayPal are a nightmare .

I have spoken to them on the phone here in the UK and in Ireland. I have written to their head office here in the UK - then written to their PayPal UK based of operation in Ireland. I even resorted to sending about five e-mails out to some of their active directors and CEO accounts which caught some traction as I got a grovelling phone call a few days later stating "it'll just take a couple of months", however, defaults are still being reported to my credit file.

PayPal UK report to both Transunion and Equifax (weirdly the Equifax is stagnant) and both are unable to correct the bad information which is normally the case; Transunion "supressed" the account but noted the suppression could be removed at any point (not sure what the point of this is).

I'm playing hardball with them.

1) I sent a letter to their Luxembourg office as they appear to be based abroad (must do this before ICO complaint can be made as the business response / lack of is required).

2) I then sent a complaint to our information commissioner stating PayPal UK had not replied.

3) They picked up the complaint and advised they would have to use the IMI system to pass my complaint to the equivalent information advisory body over in Luxembourg - this is because Ebay Europe (SARL) are responsible for PayPal UK, are based in Luxembourg and hence bound by that country's information commissioning office.

4) I'm waiting... sharpening a pointy stick, and waiting.... :exclamati

I would warn anybody that whilst PayPal credit might be a useful product, the convoluted way in which it operated in the UK market, is based out of Ireland but has the main office in Luxembourg, means that if you have a problem like this - it could be a lengthy one.

Advice on any other options that I haven't taken would be welcome !

  • Hey there,

Do you have an update on the above? Also could you message me the contacts and addresses you used?
In a nutshell, I raised a complaint with them back in Jan 19' as they were taking money out of my regular account. They then closed my Personal and Credit account without warning and completely unbeknownst to myself, Defaulted the account March 19'. I only found out December 2019 when I signed up to a Credit File website.
They are refusing to take my calls and ignore all emails. I was going to report to the FCA but i don't think they will deal with it. My only option is solicitors but I can't afford that.

Any and all help, extremely appreciated, it's disgusting their practices.
