Car dealer guarantee

Hello everyone,

I bought a car on Saturday 19/10 from a dealer for £1100.He gave me a month guarantee on engine and gear box. I picked it up yesterday because I asked him to have it cleaned and valetted which he agreed and paid for. When I took the car to my mechanic yesterday he was horrified and said that the car is worth nothing, I would need to spend hundreds or thousands to get it fixed: brakes, the whole exhaust pipe etc etc. I called the dealer and wanted to return it, I only just picked it up 2 hours before. He said he doesn't do returns and if I return it he will deduct £400! That's nearly half of what I paid! I have been searching whether there is some trading law that would prevent him from doing that. Does anyone know about consumer rights when you buy a car from a dealer?
Thanks in advance

How much MOT is left on the vehicle? Have you checked the MOT history for the vehicle? What does it show as problems and advisories?

Is your mechanic saying the vehicle is not roadworthy? (The dealer would be committing a criminal offence by selling an unroadworthy vehicle - even if he didn't know ... dealers are expected to know). Or is he just touting for business?
  • I don't think he is touting for business, he told me to take the car back and never ever repair it because it will cost me 2 x what I already paid. MOT for another 6 months, some advisory notes but obviously they said 6 months ago the car was roadworthy.

You've bought a near-end-of-life car for a grand. It has six months ticket on it.

Next year's ticket is unlikely to be cheap. Did anybody promise otherwise?

Sorry, but I'm not seeing what the vendor's done wrong here. If you wanted something that wasn't "tide-me-over-until-it-dies", you needed to spend a chunk more, or simply buy wiser. Your mate owes you a beer or two for not looking it over properly, or for not ensuring your expectations aligned with reality.
