I'm pretty sure I saw a big rat in the garden . Do I need to do pest control or leave it alone as it hasn't come into the house ... I do have kids that play in garden ...

If you are seeing rats there's probably a nearby food source (like a neighbor feeding birds) not necessarily a problem unless they are getting in the house or causing damage, but if you want to trim down numbers google 'goodnature traps' . They ker-pow rats dead (technical term) then reset, dead rat gets scavenged so you don't even have to empty.
