HELP!!!! Modem for a Laptop???

Hi all... this is my first post for the techies so I hope this makes sense..
My aunt has decided to become a Silver Surfer!! She bought a laptop with windows vista.. she has signed up to virgin broadband and received her modem from them yesterday.. I tried to conect her to the internet today but it kept coming up with error message 815 .. I called to ask virgin what this was and the advisor said I had the wrong modem for a laptop - the one I had been sent was for a tower.. can anyone advise what I need as I have never owned a laptop and am not sure what to do from here.. The advisor said it should have a plastic end and the one we had been sent had a metal end - I have no idea what any of this means!! Thanks so much for any help anyone can offer and have a wonderful evening...:D

you would only need to connect via the LAN connector on the side??

or if this is a USB modem then via that

give me 5 mins and I;ll work out what modem they are sending these days

    815 is an authentication error

looks like user name /password combination

a modem would work on a Laptop OR a PC

do you know if they are on cable

  • erm the advisor was talking rubbish - you can connect a laptop exactly the same as a desktop. As above sounds like some settings in the modem are wrong.
