Registering SORN
The tax on my wife's car runs out at the end of this month. We have sold the car privately but the buyer doesn't want to collect it until next month. Because we pay by direct debit we don't get a V11 certificate. This means that once a SORN is registered using the V5C (11 digit) number the car ceases to be licensed to drive on the road. This puts us at a disadvantage compared with anybody who doesn't pay by direct debit and receives a V11 certificate with a 16 digit number enabling them to apply for a SORN and continue to drive the car until the end of the month.
If the car has been SORN'd will the new owner be able to drive it on the road if we apply online for the car to be registered in the new owner's name on the day?

Why nor just wait until the end of the month and SORN it then?
As for the new owner, you need to change the keeper (not owner) and then he needs to tax it.0 -
You sorn it on the existing V5 11 digit doc ref number or reminder.
The new keeper taxes it via the 12 digit document ref number number on the green slip when the change of keeper is filled in and sent off to DVLA
If the new keeper doesn't tax it within a couple of weeks or so the green slip won't work and they have to wait until the new V5 arrives via the post.0 -
You're right although it means I have to wait for a refund0

You can do change if keeper online between 7am and 7pm.
You don't get a refund for unused part month of tax, only unused complete months.
Refunds are normally with you within 2 weeks of notifying the DVLA.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear it in 2026.0
