Installing drainage in driveway

Hi all,

First time poster here, looking for some advice.

I have recently bought a house and the recent wet weather has highlighted a drainage issue on the driveway.

Water is collecting near the front door, which obviously isn't ideal! The driveway is asphalt, and is raised slight against next doors. I have added pictures at the link below, remove the spaces 😁

Looking for suggestions on possible solutions. Current ideas are a soakaway, or French drain. Not sure what the asphalt is laid on at the moment, so these might not be found easy. All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Gunner

No problem, but I forgot that I meant to type a response to your question!

I have a slightly similar problem, but (a) only when the rain is Biblical, and (b) it usually goes away after a fairly short interval (1-2 hours). Does your water pool by the door and stay there? I know of other friends and family who have water pooling on the hardscaping outside their front door, but it doesn't cause any problem with the house (e.g., damp, etc.), in which case they simply put up with it as a minor inconvenience.

How high above the tarmac is your damp proof course?

On a separate note, my last house (in Scotland) was built at the bottom of a crescent on a hill. All the neighbours above me had hardscaped - parking in their front yard, and often large parts of their back gardens too. During heavy rain, the neighbourhood's rainfall just went straight through my garden (under the grass, gravel, etc. of my garden), down to my patio, and via the side alleyway, formed a river down my dozen or so front steps. I was occasionally greeted by a small stream when I arrived home! I guess I'm telling you this because some small problems aren't worth throwing money at.

Sounds pretty similar to your issue. The water usually only stays there for a few hours. Damp proof course is about 2 bricks above the drive. So no issue there.

Perhaps you're right. Money might be better spent elsewhere! I'll wait and see what it's like during the winter.
