Have you looked at Ash Vale Surrey, about same distance from Waterloo as Farnborough.0

I missed this somehow. We did look at Reading at the beginning. It was hard to tell which areas are dodgy and which are nice. We were told to avoid Whitley at all costs but accidentally viewed something there (we lined up something like 12 viewings over Friday and Sat) and the immediate area seemed quite nice. Finally we saw a house we were ready to offer on but then went to view stuff in Farnborough the weekend after and loved how green and quiet-but-not-too-quiet it was. Also found "the house" (which now fell through) and that made us commit to Farnborough back then. Maybe a good idea to look at Reading again.
General rule in Reading is that north of the river is “nicer” although you then have to cross the wholly inadequate bridges to get to town, station etc. Lower Earley probably better value for money. And yes avoid Whitley.0 -

If you were going to the station from Caversham it is probably not very sensible to drive there. Parking at the station is very expensive (around 20 pounds per day) and not an easy drive. From areas not too far from the Thames it is a pleasant walk especially with the new footbridge over the river. In the mornings a lot of people are walking or cycling that way. If you're further up the hill I would use the bus rather than drive.0
