switching from pre pay to smart meter

I got the keys to a 'do-er upper' house on Friday. I noted that both the gas and electric meters were prepay items. Both indicate that I have about £200 worth of energy on each. if I call up the energy suppliers to come and install proper meters will I loose the credit I already have or will they honour it and stick it on my new bill?

im tempted to let these run right down and then get onto the suppliers but im unsure how long they will take to come out and swap them over. Also Ive no idea how to actually top these up. the electric one seems to have some kind of key card that slots into the meter, im guessing I have to go to a shop and load some credit onto it.

The credit is technically not yours and for all you know might disappear relatively quickly to pay off previous tenant debt.

If you're going to be living there phone up the existing suppliers and get new accounts set up, they will either send you new keys/cards (or tell you where you can get new ones from a local PayPoint or similar), these will reset the meters (stop them taking great chunks out for debt recovery for example) and then you can enquire about swapping them out, this may involve credit checks or security deposits. Normally credits that get applied to a Prepay meter that is swapped out appear on your bill as a credit.
  • Hi,

the credit should be paid back to the previous occupier providing they have contacted supplier with final meter readings.

As already said you will need to contact supplier and set up your own account.
  • ok cheers guys. sorry for the late reply.
  • I phoned the supplier today to register a prepay account in my name and they said the remaining balance wouldn't be returned to the previous tenants and they didn't seem to bothered about it. so it looks like I have 'won' it till they come out and fit normal meters.
  • the suplier will post key/cards to you do NOT place them in the meters , they (at least elec will) wipe out the credit
