I dont seem to be able to connect to the internet by the ethenet port on the virgin media modem does this have to be enbaled or is that a silly question

The port on your PC need to be enabled, the modem one does not.
If you are connecting via the ethernet port connect it all up whilst the pc and modem are switched off then switch the pc and modem on to see if it works after the restart.
Are you getting lights on the port at the back of your pc?0 -
Switch the modem on first and then the PC.
If the ethernet port on the PC is enabled then it will link automatically.0 -
yes lights on at the back of pc connecton dosent work to laptop either0

If you have rebooted both pc and modem,Its either the net is down in your area or you have a fault with the modem.
Call VM and they will tell you the status in your area and do some diagnostic checks on your modem.0 -
check you have the ethernet port either configured with an acceptable IP address or more easily set to obtain the ip address autoomatically via dhcp.0
