transferring car insurance

Hello,

I was wondering if the following is possible.

I have a VW polo. the VW polo will have a 3 year No claims bonus at the end of the year.

i want to buy a new car, sell the vw polo and transfer the NCD across.

can i transfer an existing car insurance policy (tesco) to my new car, after sale of my VW polo.
would this mean that i am transferring 2 years no claims dicount and at the end of the year (jan 08) i would get the 3rd year NCD as well.

Does tesco provide a protected 3 years no claims discount? if not, can you guys advise of car insurance companies which will provide protected 3 years no claims bonus

    1. Yes, you just inform Tesco that you are changing your car and give them the date of change over and the registration number of the new vehicle.

    2. If you check the Tesco website it states that you can protect your NCD.
  • its you thats insured not the car isn't it?? i mean the person you sell the car to wouldn't get 2 years no claims would it
am i missing the point lol?
Finally debt free, all thanks to this site and all the posters:j
  • thanks for the replies,

what i meant was will i manage to transfer over 2 years and 10 months of insurance policy.
my issue was with the 10 months of insurance policy which will transfer into an extra year of NCD in 2 months.

i did a search on this forum regarding protecting no claims discount, and came across the following
Q: Is My No Claims Discount Protected? Is My No Claims Discount Guaranteed?

A: If you have 5 or more years No Claims Bonus then this is automatically protected and guaranteed for life. This means that once you have 5 years or more NCD then we will not reduce your No Claims Bonus following any number of claims. Protected No Claims Bonus and the Guarantee for life are not available for those with less than 5 years No Claims Bonus.

can i protect 3 years no claims bonus, or does it have to be 5 years no claims bonus. someone told me that the protection of no claims bonus values from insurance to insurance.

What you have quoted about is for protection AND guaranteed NCB. Do you remember what co it was, out of interest? Iv'e never heard of it.

Also, most co's will protect NCB at 3 years so you should be ok.

Thanks for finding that out for me. I think though that the first person was asking about Tesco but the reply was about ecar insurance.

  • so tesco does protect 3 years no claims bonus. i guess that would be the minimum that can be protected, correct?

which company offers the best deal on protecting 3 years no claims discount?
