New door and window quote

Hi all
I've received a quote from tradesman via text. Work is for new window and new door. He's given me the total amount (materials and fitting), plus the type of materials.
Is a text an acceptable format for a quote?
Would I need further information?
Is it usual for homeowner to inform insurer of small works like this?
Is a written contract needed?
Thanks

1) I would say that as a form of communication, there's no reason why a text is not acceptable - though it's not very flexible when it comes down to any details or edits. It's certainly better than a verbal estimate. (See comment 4 below)
2) It's not completely clear what information you did get, but I'd want to know things like whether it includes disposing of waste (will they take away the old window/door), and a detailed list of the major materials (what type of door, window, etc., potentially also including make and model of window/door)
3) I doubt you need to tell your insurer, unless you are making substantial changes (e.g., adding an external doorway). I'd certainly ask whether the tradesperson has liability insurance, and whether they will register the new window with CERTASS, FENSA, or otherwise.
4) I'd be looking for a final quote on "paper" (e.g., Word document, pdf) - although this could be attached to an email. I'm not sure I'd feel very comfortable with a text constituting the final quote. Essentially, a written quote forms a contract, so you don't need to hire a solicitor or anything.(Nearly) dunroving0
