I use pass on linux. Stores the passwords as encrypted files on your hard drive for more security. You can synchronise it with other machines using git. There are also versions for Android and Windows.

I use the free version of Dashlane. There are clearly many to choose from.
Personally I wouldn't use one tied to my provider - at least not without checking what would happen if I left that provider.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Meanwhile, the only reply that answers both of the questions actually asked by the OP is the very first one0

Stragglebod, I've just come back to this and you make a good point.
I've given up on the idea as I've received no useful responses.
I wasn't really after any suggestions for password managers, more like answers to the functionality.
My question still remains, how does it actually make the changes within the actual organisation I'm dealing with.0 -

Actually you received many useful answers that I think answered all of your questions, but if you'd rather appear ignorant than good luck in getting answers to any further queries.0 -

Lastpass can automatically change passwords for you on certain sites, but not all. Even the ones it says it can don't work half the time. Especially if you have 2 factor authentication turned on which I'd always recommend turning on if a website allows.
You still need to manually go to the website, log in and go through the change password process yourself.
You can run the security challenge on Lastpass which is good. It'll list all of the websites which you've saved passwords for and then you can sort by when the password was last changed. If it's getting to 6 months or a year since I changed a password, I know to log in and change it.0 -
Instead of asking, just download Lastpass, try it out and if you don't like it uninstall.

The questions the OP asked were:How does a password manager deal with all that if I choose to use it's random password generator? If I choose at some later date not to continue using the app and either resort to my current method or an alternative app am I left with umpteen obscure passwords that this app has created?Additionally, how do these apps cope with only selected characters asked for on a password screen.0
