v5 shows aquired date earlier than I bought it...

V5 says acquired 01 03 2019, ticket for 25 05 2019, actually bought the car 30 06 2019!


Well it seems like I may have been conned.


I have insurance document that says when I changed the car, tax info is visible online, and even GPS trace of where I got the car from.


I have a feeling they know how to game the system and thus I am stuck?


Only just noticed the V5 document date was wrong as I never received it (seller never sent it off, I had the v5 new keepers supplement though so could apply myself).


Also, ticket letter was sent out 18 10 2019 - almost 5 months later?

Who are “they” who have conned you and “gamed the system”?

The previous owner? DVLA? Parking wardens? International Jewry and/or communists?

Contact the DVLA, tell them the date is incorrect. Send off dated proof of purchase (dated purchase receipt - you did get one didn't you ?), contact ticket issuer and tell them you weren't the owner.

Why this is so difficult to figure out, I don't know.

Btw, your insurance document isn't proof of when you changed the car, it's proof of when you changed the policy, same with the car tax.

So you bought the car at the end of June, and received the V5C through a week or three later.
At that point, you noticed the vendor had put the wrong keeper-change date on the old V5C, resulting in the wrong date on yours...

Right? And what happened when you queried it with DVLA at that time?

The insurance and tax merely show when you insured and taxed it. That might not have been immediately on change of keepership.

Is this a council ticket or from a private parking company? Does it read as the first correspondence issued or a follow up?

It's a council ticket. It reads as the first letter sent.



I didn't receive the v5 document at all, I had to apply for it myself and sent DVLA my "new keepers slip" to receive it (without having to pay DVLA for it). When it did arrive I didn't notice the acquired date was wrong. I only looked in detail after I received the ticket.



I have filled out the form for the council ticket, but since I do not have a receipt from the seller ( ) all I have now is some points of reference which I realise may not be exactly when it was purchased.




And thank you Car 54, I may not have been clear that I was talking about the seller (even though I mentioned it further down), no need to be an !!!! about it.

With a V62?

Note the black-outlined box on there.

The V5C/2 also has "Date of sale/transfer" on it, written in by the vendor at the time he hands it to you...


Which of those would take precedence in a conflict, I don't know. But I presume both were accurate?

There is one other source of an incorrect date that I can think of...
Was the V5C/3 "Transfer to trader" slip present on the V5C when you bought the car...?


I suspect what's happened is that the actual previous keeper sold the car on the March date to the trader, and sent the V5C/3 to DVLA. When you bought the car from the trader, DVLA applied that date instead of the one on the V5C/2 and/or V62.

This is a reminder to always check documentation as soon as you receive it, and correct any errors at that time. With no receipt for the vehicle either, I suspect it's going to be hard to challenge the ticket - all the documentary proof says that the car was your responsibility at that time. You only have circumstantial evidence otherwise.

I had sent a V62 off, I forgot about that form, I had included my new keepers slip with that.


Since I filled the V62 digitally before printing it, I have a copy... I was the idiot and put in the wrong date, which just so happens to be the MOT date, still cannot see why I did that.


Why DVLA has 30th... because I am now owner 2 and 3, the seller did send it off... after I sent the v62..






DVLA webchat is pretty good, hopefully this is the end of the nightmare phone system. Will have a new V5C produced in 2-4 weeks.

There we go, then. All sorted, hopefully...

And conspiracy theories put to rest nice and easily simply by just going back, checking the paperwork, and contacting the responsible body.

Thanks - was just a bit worried is all - ticket and a wrong date. Two things wrong at the same time, some red flags went up.


DVLA was a surprise how easy it was for once. Have nightmares about previous form issues!

You kept the receipt, that will have the date on it. That should be all the proof you need to get the date changed.
