I would argue the point, but its not the right thread for it
I'm not sure what kind of holiday they had booked, I would agree with you if it was a trip to spain, but I'm also sat on the fence because life is not just about bills, and if my own parents hadn't have taken risks we'd have probably never had a holiday as a child
AFAIK the holiday in this case didn't take place so its a bit of a moot point, it could have been booked at a time when things were a bit steadier, and sometimes financial problems comes in threes, could get wiped out by the dishwasher breaking down then a late payment, we dont really know everything so whilst your advice about having some spare funds isn't bad, its not always as easy advice to take as it is given.
Do wish the OP some success with their employer in the coming days and I would try and identify what caused the delay, and also re-state the point that its not actually in advance you are seeking, especially if the delay is not down to your fault.
For some irony, I forgot to submit my timesheets this week and yes I will have a full week delay before I get it. My fault totally,0 -
I agree that life is not just about bills, but what of it? Does this mean that you agree with the OP that booking a holiday away comes ahead of saving up a couple of hundred pounds emergency fund?
That’s your prerogative, but in my opinion it is nearly suicidally stupid. As we see, this may now cost the OP, in short order, his job, then his home, and who knows where that leads?0 -
OP there won't be some magic protection which makes it ok for you not to go to work. You won't be paid and there might even be disciplinary issues. The pay might be the employer's fault but this level of responsibility for everything that happens to you because you're living hand to mouth just doesn't exist.
The best scenario is that your employer sorts it on Monday and that you then put whatever you would have spent on the missed weekend break into an emergency fund for the future.
I'm perhaps a little harsh but if you can afford a holiday of any sort, you can afford to have £50 stashed for emergencies and really the latter should come before the former. I know that isn't what you asked, you want to know what the employer is liable for but the reality is you are more responsible for yourself than your employer is at every stage.0 -

It means, in short order that I don't really know what led up to the OP to be in the position they are in, and I don't wish to assume that the holiday was booked with foreknowledge that one late payment might wipe out their finances.
I don't even know what type of holiday this was, it could be a week in the maldives or just some time off work to feed the ducks.
Anyway, don't want to derail this thread, just wanted to say telling people to save more isn't always just an appropriate bit of throwaway advice.0 -
Back on topic
The employer, by not paying you, may be in breach of their contract with you. The remedy is to pay you as soon as practicable and possibly pay any charges incurred because of this breach.
By not going in to work without the consent of your manager puts you in breach of your contract with your employer. The remedy could be to terminate your employment.
The only options open to you are to
a) ask your manager if they could get someone else to cover that shift
or
b) get the money to cover the fare.0 -
How far away is your employer from your home?0

But not paying the OP on tie is the companies fault.
They are not sorting it out quick enough!
Indeed, but having said that what realistically can the OP do about it beyond asking nicely?
In theory, if they are in breach of contract by paying late, then the OP could make a claim against the employer for any losses this causes (which he would have a legal duty to keep as low as possible).
However at best that will take time. If the employer is difficult about it the only option may be to take them to court. That is unlikely to lengthen the time he remains employed! Again, in theory, he would be protected against unfair dismissal as he would be making a claim to enforce a statutory right but in the real world....
So, all the OP can do is 1) ask nicely. 2) somehow borrow the money as cheaply as possible. Then 3) ask the employer to reimburse the interest costs and 4) for the future, somehow adjust his finances to arrive at some kind of emergency fund.0 -
OP, Are you able to cycle, walk, or run to work?
Do you have a credit card that you could use to buy a bike off eBay, or can you borrow one, or get one from freecycle?
If not then I suggest that you ask if you can take some holiday until your pay comes through.0 -
Hi all & sorry for the delay in answering, my phone got cut off and I use it to access the net @ home too ( i have another extension to pay the bill )
Anyway thx to all that actually tried to answer the question, I kinda had a similar thought but couldn't find an answer anywhere on the net hence the post here.
Ive had some monetary help off friends and can get to work ok now.
To all the others - here`s some answers, hope it helps. :T
- I work approx 1hr away by foot, no bike. I would walk, but i have a back injury where one of my facet joints has collapsed and after approx 20 mins of walking I have to stop due to the pain, its an option but not the greatest for me.
- My holiday was ment to be me visiting my parents as I haven't seen them in approx 6 months, It would have been around journey of approx £45, no big trips or abroad (I wished).
- I live hand to mouth due to unfortunately working for 2 dodgy companies in the past 3 years that have illegally taken wages from me.
One being a builder who knocked me for approx £600 ( when I was self employed ) and the other company(JG pest Control) handing my last wage slip (£350) 4 months late to HMRC:mad: ...... This 2nd issue caused me massive financial problems, I will explain....
I was unfortunately un-employed when this happened, but during the month of December I found one day that the usual UC payment hadn't gone thru,(normally approx £350pm) I called the UC helpline and they told me that the HMRC had reported that JG Pest had paid me some wages, even though I hadnt worked for them for a while.
This naturally confused me and I disputed the findings, The UC people told me to get evidence, of which I did in the form of bank statements from when I had worked at the firm to the present day, which clearly showed that I HAD NOT received the funds.
The UC peeps believed me and put into motion to get this over turned, only to be told about a week later that the decision would stand the same as I had to get the issue resolved myself with the HMRC as that's where the DWP has to conform its finances from?
Naturally I rang Acas, who would have been really helpful it had worked with the firm for more than a year... Their advice was for me to resolve this with the company that screwed me in the 1st place - yeah right?? lol
So within approx 1 year I was approx £950 down out of no fault of my own.
In the mean time my housing benefit was cut in half ( thank god I have a great landlord ) so another £350 down, then the council tax benefit was stopped due to my council being informed by HMRC that I had received fundsAnother £160
So at approx £1500 down and all my savings blown away to bureaucracy, I was then faced with trying to convince my local food bank that I was really in need as the DWP would not give me a voucher as they advised they could not as I had not been sanctioned :rotfl: In the end, I had to go thru my doctor with the whole array of paper evidence in the hope he had a brain, he did
Along side that I had to borrow more cash/loans to get to interviews I was due to attend at that time - Needless to say Xmas just did not happen, its a year that i`d rather forget, but have spent the last 2 years pretty much skint paying it all off.
I do put money aside when I can, atm Its tough due to the above.
If anyone knows a department that will actually be-able to resolve this mess for real and not tell me to fix it myself that would be great. As far as I can tell JG committed fraud, but no government departments want to seriously acknowledge this even tho Ive provided them with the evidence?? Crazy :rotfl:
And here I am now with another company doing the same  (wilko btw)
Again thanks to all that tried to help :beer:0 -
Your MP/councillor may be able to help with the DWP/HMRC issue.0
