I believe that it is actually illegal to sell a "one bar electric fire" these days!

Oh, by the way, it was (and still is) a 1kW electric fire, not a 1 kWh electric fire.:)
use one of the two or three bars then., have some sense FGS They re all adjustable !

Do a burns test.Get hold of ideally a 1 kwh one bar electric fire..switch absolutely everything off, including freezer, standby stuff etc and run the heater for exactly one hour in which time exactly one unit should be used..That is close enough to test the accuracy.

The OP is disputing the accuracy of their old meters so this won't really prove anything (it'll potentially rule out a problem with the current meter).

OP I think all you can do at the moment is to continue to monitor to usage and see if there's an increase over the winter months. I know this might sound odd but are you sure you don't have some form of electrical heating (such as underfloor heating) which you think is fed by the oil fired boiler? The only reason I say this is because my parents have oil fired heating but their kitchen/garden Room also has electrical underfloor heating.

Well Argos sell a 2kw Dimplex with a 1 kw setting.

and I'm sure most people know what is meant between 1kw and 1kwh

Is water heating by oil as well, or is there an immersion heater switched keeping a tank of water scalding hot all day?

Yes, the readings were a mix of estimates and actuals, I had thought though when actuals were presented that there were true-ups/downs to correct any estimations.

My question therefore is....anyone heard of two meters reading inaccurately?

    Thanks
Work out the daily consumption between two actual readings from the new meter. Inaccurate estimates at the start and end of the time period might be skewing the results.
Is it possible your new meter is under reading?

Obviously its possible that two meters could be wrong but the probability is low and lower still that they were both equally inaccurate.
  • Hundreds of millions to one that two meters in a row are faulty..
Got to be another explanation.but its odds on than that certain types of meters can easily be misread..eg electric dial meter with 6 rotating pointer s are constantly badly misread especially by the public and commonly by employed meter readers who are supposed to know better. They are quite old but still lots in use even now.
Digital meters with their very small indexes are also easily misread especially if viewed not square on..If the meter is low down or high a 4 and a 9 are easily mixed..Same for 1 s and 7 s
