Why would anybody ever pay upfront?

National Rail Card discounts e.g. Senior Rail Card, Disabled Persons Rail Card can be applied to Oyster cards, but cannot be applied when paying by contactless debit/credit card. This can save quite a bit if used a lot for travel that starts in the off-peak period, because the off-peak cap is applied even when some journeys take place in the peak period.
