Digital Metric Gas Meters

Does anyone know how common these are? (British gas says they are 5 digit)

Frugal s photo is one of the far superior mechanical type which last for 25 years and do not need batteries every 5 years to 10 years. These meters do not get fitted much anymore. I d guess that nearly every new meter and 100% of smart meters are the digital display meters which are battery powered.

The image posted isn't a digital display, its a mechanical one.

All BG smart meters are digitial metric meters.

There are very few non-smart digital gas meters in the country. I have never seen an imperial digital meter.

I have a digital meter that's very similar to Frugal's, except that it measures cubic feet and also has a red pointer that moves visibly clockwise. It dates from 1985, so it's beaten 25 years !

What's the lozenge shaped device bolted on at the top? Unlike Frugal's (which was blue), mine is yellow.

Update: Whoops, Frugal's photo has suddenly disappeared !

Thats not digital mate, and the lozenge shaped object is the anti-tamper device.

Well, it's digital in the sense it shows (mostly) digits rather than rotating hands, although I agree that digital tends to mean umpteen-segment electronic displays these days.

What does the lozenge do, or shouldn't I ask? Explode and cover you with indelible yellow dye if you disturb it?
  • Ah, so are we saying that they aren't common after all?

Digital smart meter = everywhere, very common.

Digital non-smart meter = not very many at all.
