Compliance telephone interview

Hi all.
Ive received a letter today just in my name saying that Im due a phonecall later this month with a compliance officer from DWP.
It states that they need to make sure my payments are correct.
I get income support as Im a carer for my partner who gets PIP due to having severe rheumatoid arthritis amongst other problems.
We have 3 children but only get CB and CTC for 2 now as the eldest started an apprenticship (shes 17) which I informed HMRC about as soon as she got it and therefore my payments were reduced accordingly.
However I have had a letter from DWP recently asking if my Daughter is still at college etc. But I haven't replied yet. Thing is though, I don't get any money via IS for any of my kids...I claim CTC instead. Which she has been taken off already.
Apart from that, theres nothing else ive to be concerned about. I paid a cheque into my bank for £122 from my sons football team - the club have funded him for a pair of proper sports glasses after a very narky ref said he couldn't play in his usual glasses. And a friend of ours has lent us some money too.
My mother in law has asked me to put money in my bank to pay deposits for caravan holidays as she doesn't have online banking. Shes not at all techinally minded. Cant even use a phone properly let alone the internet.
Has anyone else had these and are they anything to worry about?

It could just be a random check as they do this sometimes.

How often does your mother in law put money into your bank and how much money does she put into it? This could potentially cause problems.
  • If you have nothing to hide you have no reason to worry.

Tbh i think its something to do with not informing them of my Daughter starting her apprenticeship but I was lead to believe that they operate an all in one system...HMRC share this info with DWP and vice versa.
In regards to my mum in law..she will find a caravan, have me ring the owners to book it then she gives me the money (deposit of say £50 to start with) to transfer then just before the holidays due to be paid up she will give me the remainder of the balance which is usually around £350, to transfer. This only happens once a year. Sometimes twice depending if she can get away twice. I have mentioned to her that Im not overly keen on doing it but just try to help her out where I can. Shes 72 years old and has no clue about anything internet based.

I'm not worried, just curious as to what it may be about. I've got nothing to hide. Just never had one of these before.

Never, ever assume one Government department talks to another. At least don't assume that because you speak to one department that is all you need to do. You should always inform all potentially interested parties separately and it is your responsibility to ensure that they are informed.
I'm not having a go at you, as it's not unreasonable to think there would be communication between departments - but there isn't.
  • Oh I didn't think that you were having a go - its fine honestly.
Just didn't know that I had to inform DWP as I get NO money for my kids via them...its all separate via CTC. Has been since late 2002 when I first claimed for my eldest.
When I informed tax credits about her apprenticeship, I asked them if I should inform DWP and they said no because I get CTC which is a different department.
Should have known better to be honest..my Mum in law had a similar issue with one of the other grandkids when they were living with her. She informed one department who said they would share info but didnt. She had a form to fill out which asked if the grandchild paid any board etc.
I don't take any board off my Daughter either...her wage is hers.
  • It could just be a random check. I had one last year, I was on the phone about five minutes.

It's most likely nothing to do with not reporting the changes with your children is it's a letter from DWP because as you said you don't claim any benefits for them through DWP.

Ring the number on the letter and ask them what it's about and they may give you more information.

I note you're claiming Income Support and carers allowance, do you work or have you done any paid work recently?

    Hi,
They wrote to me recently (about 2 months ago)asking what my eldest child is doing now ie is she staying in full time education or not.
They did the same last year when she left school and started her first year in college.
Last year I rang them up rather than sending the form back. I asked them why did they need to know as I don't get any money for children through my Income Support.
Their reply was that they need to know Im getting the correct amount of money.
So in July this year when DD started her apprenticeship, I contacted CB and CTC to inform them and she was taken off the claim. I asked them should I inform DWP..they said no i didnt have to. But by the sounds of it, I do need to!
With me not replying to the recent letter from DWP, thats why Im thinking it could be that.
There's absolutely nothing else I can think of.
We've not been doing anything dodgy, neither me or my partner have done any paid work.
When I got this letter today it states that "we need to know that you're getting the correct amount of benefit".
I rang them as I needed to change my phone number, I asked the guy who I spoke to what it was all about as ive no idea and all they said was something about reviewing the benefits I get or words to that effect. Thats all I got out of them
