Moving House - Contract ending

My energy contract with my present supplier ends in December and I've been told that if I renew it and move I won't be able to transfer it and will have to pay to cancel it.

So, as I'm hoping to move into a smaller property sometime early next year, I was wondering what to do. I suppose I'll have to move to a standard tariff, but with whom? I'm not sure I'll want to stay with my present supplier so would I be better off going with one of the big suppliers or just stay put until I move.

If you can't transfer your tariff then all that'll happen is it'll end when you move out (or when you tell them you've moved out) and if this is more than 49 days from its ending with exit fees. When you move into the new house it will be on a standard tariff with whoever it is now and you can just move around in the normal way.

When you enter the 49 day window for your current tariff (which may be any time now depending on your date) you could just move to another provider who either has no exit fees or allow one to port the tariff to another house, if you know for definite you're going to move.

New house you will be on a deemed contract with the existing supplier . That will be at standard rates .
Register with the supplier you are then free to move .

Why not move to a tariff with no exit fees .

A house move voids your existing energy contract without penalty. Who is telling you otherwise, and which supplier/tariff?
It's correct that you cannot port a tariff between properties.

You need to read the specific terms carefully.

Generally you cannot take a tariff with you to a new address, but the odd supplier may allow this

Generally, when you leave a property, the tariff ends and early exit fees do not apply. But the odd supplier may charge early exit fees.
If your supplier is going to charge exit fees when you move, and you are sure you will move, take this into consideration when deciding whether to renew with them, or ditch & switch.
