If new agents ask for references it will jeopoardise my tenancy with current agents won't it?

I am thinking if I am not successful then it will 'blow my cover' with my current tenancy.
I, of course, will give my proper notice once the new place is secure but if I apply for the new place they are going to ask for the current agent to get references. If for some reason I weren't successful then the current agents will know my intentions which would make it more urgent that I needed to find a place then because if they weren't any the wiser I could keep my rolling contract on at my leisure while I found a place.
Do the referencing companies offer any discretion about that or would it raise a red flag to ask anything like that and maybe hurt your chances of getting accepted if they might thought you were not wanting them to contact the current agents?

I don't understand your concern? What do you think will happen?0

Whether you've given them for a reference or not is irrelevant. It's not the same as handing your notice in. Unless and until you do that, your tenancy will continue in exactly the same way.
If the boot were on the other foot, and somebody said "Yep, here's my reference, but I don't want you to contact them...", wouldn't you be suspicious as to whether that reference was going to be unsatisfactory?0 -
Dear Current Agent,
I am actively seeking to move from PROPERTY XYZ, I don't know exactly when but i will of course give 1 months notice in line with a rental period as per the tenancy agreement.
I am currently applying to rent properties so you may be contacted to provide a reference in the near future, I would appreciate it if you could do so promptly.
Kind Regards

How will it affect your current agents if as I understand it from previous threads you plan to move quite a distance away to a new town?
they will supply a reference and you move on.
Its not like your current agent or indeed LL is going to hold you hostage and say you cant move!in S 38 T 2 F 50

The concern would be that the current agent would suddenly start viewings whereas they wouldn't have when they knew I was a satisfied customer.
So if the application for new place failed then I will know the current agent knows I wanna leave and so will remarket the property won't they; whereas beforehand they didn't. Or can they not do that until I give my notice?
I definitely wanna move it is just I thought the current ones knowing I want to move would somehow increase the urgency of me needing to secure a new place?0 -
An agent wont commence viewings on a property until they have an instruction to do so from the LL.
if you haven't handed your notice in then why would the LL remarket your property until they know if you are staying or not.
A LL wont market a property if there is a tenant under a current contract without notice of their intention to leave!
The LL doesn't have a property to rent out until you have left.in S 38 T 2 F 50

Oh ok thenI thought my getting references for a new property might have been all they needed to start the process since it implicitly telegraphs my 'intention'.

You are still paying rent, and you have not handed in your notice.
So based on your assumption what is different from the current situation where you pay rent and have not handed your notice in?
Why for the last 3 years have the agents not marketed the property....because you are living there, paying rent and not handed your notice inin S 38 T 2 F 50

I'm a landlord: Had an application from nice family - called up agent, large nation-wide chain.. They told me they only gave references if their tenant had already given notice (nasty..)
Remember a landlord - or agent - does not have to give any reference if they don't wish to.
Such a shame tenants don't demand they get references regarding landlord/agents behaviors from previous tenants. They have as much right to demand them as do landlords or agents...0 -

Or can they not do that until I give my notice? - well they can try, but it's unlikely to be a contractual obligation until notice is given

Eviction takes around 6 months, so I cant see it changing anything0
