Well, I am very sorry my advice led to that outcome, are you safe now?

  • Remember womens aid if you need them. They also have information on legal stuff as well although as you know a lot of it depends on your circumstances. I wish you all the best and it is much better to be in debt than shelling out for that lazy good for nothing abuser. Good luck.
  • Thank you all.

I did report it to the police who put me in touch with an advisory service called Next Link and they have been really helpful. Phone is on red alert so if he does turn violent again they will come immediately. At present he is in denial. He thinks that by getting a job I will stay. They will even arrange a police escort if necessary when I move out. Will probably need them especially when I try to get the van and car keys off him (both of which are mine and I pay for everything except petrol - well, I lend him the money for the petrol and he is supposed to pay me back - in total he has borrowed (mainly for drinking) £15,000 so far. Solicitors say I have no chance of getting it back so I intend to seek a contribution on 'his' house especially as I have spent another £15-£20K doing it up/furniture etc.

Unfortunately, rented accommodation is not an easy option. I am a smoker. The mortgage is interest only on my house (£80k) and the one on his is £30K so it's both I am liable for plus of course the £1k o/d on the joint account.

My main concern is whether the creditors will force the sell of his house when he gets into debt - which he will and very quickly. He says he doesn't even know how to pay a bill!. He also says he could not go for interviews without a car.

He has a JJB card which I am paying off £20 pm (adding it to money owed) and have managed to get that down to £200 but that is the first thing he will use for money!

I will just about be able to manage with my two jobs (full time day job plus three evenings per week) and have saved by making roll-ups instead of buying cigarettes. Could probably sell the car and the van and use buses instead but they are costly in Bristol. Beside which I think I would like to have some transport and independence.

Just thought, I suppose I will have to continue paying the house insurance too as house in joint names.
