Unknown Transaction

Tonight I checked our online joint NatWest currency account - I check it every other day to keep our accounts straight.

There was an amount for £14 (can't remember the exact amount without going back online) which I didn't recognise, my debit card was used for the transaction. The transaction was originally in US$'s. The company name of the transaction was AudioBooks.com. I went on their website, and clicked on 'login' - normally when I go to a website that I've previously registered, my laptop remembers the login details - there were no automatic login details on this site. (Thank G I'm not going crazy :j )

If I buy online, I use a credit card. I definitely wouldn't use my debit card for an online purchase.

I phoned NatWest fraud line, they were brilliant, they've stopped my debit card and will be sending me a new one. The £14 will be credited back within a couple of days. They agreed I hardly use my debit card.

This is really disconcerting, and I'm wondering how frequent this sort of thing is?

  • Card fraud of some description happens every hour of every day on multiple occasions.

I’m not sure how disconcerting you want to make it?

I've no doubt card fraud does happen every hour of every day. It's a shock when it happens personally. My post was to try and understand, by sharing with others, the 'what, why, and how' this happened - this is a forum for discussion.:)
  • @OP - having your browser save your login credentials isn't the best metric to see if you've been on a site before. Clearing your cookies/saved login details will re-prompt you for your details, or the site itself could ask you to re-login for security. But a USD purchase is likely to be one you remember, particularly if you don't make use of your card very often.

It's agree that it's definitely annoying when it happens, particularly if you take care to try make sure you don't expose your card details. Most of the time your details are compromised through random chance or through the fault of someone else, which makes it even more annoying. At least you've had a good experience with the fraud team - there are some horror stories of people getting the run around from the banks and having to provide "proof" that it wasn't them who made the transaction(s)...

You could try emailing customer service at the audiobooks.com site and see if they can help from the debit card number they may have the last four digits stored for example also have you checked your emails and spam to see if you have any audio book acknowledgements

It's not clear that you checked whether the other joint account holder made the purchase.

Thank you for that good idea to contact Audiobooks, I've never dealt with them before. Also a good idea to check my spam box.

Thank you. Money has now been returned to my account :j

It concerns me that you had to do this. The implication is that you are setting up vairous accounts on websites and forgetting about them. If I had had a debited by an unknown company, I would KNOW that I had never used them without having to do this.

Audio Books do a 30-day free trial, but you have to sign up with a card. Is it possible someone signed up for this and then didn't cancel?

Hope you checked with other people in the house 1st....

But you will not be the 1st of the last if you have not.

One would hope that the fraud team will have checked who's card the payment was on... Or someone will be wondering why their card is no longer working :rotfl:

Every time you use your card there is a chance someone will take the details. Most will sell them on. So do not think it was one of the last transactions you made.

  • The first thing I would have done is ask my partner if he/she had signed up for the service?
