  • Shame you had slug problems with your squash; I've always found it very uncomplicated (providing you know it'll take up a lot of space) and have had huge yields the past two seasons. It's an incredibly versatile veg and keeps for ages. I kept my seedlings in pots for a while before planting out, perhaps then the leaves are too tough for the slugs' liking.

Speaking of the slimy vermin, I've found the best non-chemical approach is to get up early and pick up handfuls for "rehoming" (in the council garden waste bin, or a way up the road on a verge if you're feeling charitable). At dusk works too.

I bought 3 raspberry canes for £8 from a supermarket years ago and they are productive and easy (needed a lot of water in the recent hot summers though). I make jam and flavoured vodka as well as the usual desserts when fresh.
    They are an EYESORES!!!!
