Possible Fraud in my name

I'm not sure where to post this so I hope this is the right place.

Today I recieved two letters in the post, one from 'NewDay Fraud operations' on behalf of Debenhams and the other from vodafone. The NewDay letter claims that someone has applied for credit in my name, and it certainly wasn't me. The other is for a new phone contract. I'm not with vodafone and have never been.

The vodafone letter seems a little off, as if it could have been faked but came with official looking pamphlets (which could have come from a genuine letter I suppose). And the number to call on the NewDay letter doesn't seem genuine.

Basically I'm not sure what to do. No money has left my account and I haven't had any other suspicious post, emails or calls. I've never had anything like this before. I'm going to try and investigate further, but wanted to try and get advice in the meantime as I really don't know where to start with this.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you.

If you don't trust the numbers on the letters, call on ones that you do.

It's very unlikely that they're not genuine.

Presumably you've already checked your credit files?

You should be able to find a customer service number for both Vodafone and new day using Google you can check whether they match the ones on the letter and in any case call the genuine ones

I think you are wise not to call the ones on the letter
  • I have managed to resolve the vodafone issue, I went to their website myself and used the online chat function and they have put a fraud note on the account for me.
I will now try and do the same with the NewDay one.

Thank you for the help so far. I panicked a bit at first and then realised that vodafone at least should be easy to contact about the issue. Hopefully I can solve the other issue as easily.

    Thanks again!
  • Okay, so I have managed to contact and deal with the first two instances, I then had a further instance involving Argos yesterday and have tried to check credit club to check for further instances of fraud.

However I now cannot pass the experion identification process despite everything being correct. Could this situation with the identity fraud be the reason?

This whole situation is a huge headache that I do not need right now (as if anybody ever needs it). Debenhams were amazing and were suspicious when someone tried to apply for credit instore, so denied them and flagged it as being suspected of fraud, vodafone cancelled it immediately and assured me that I would not be charged anything, but Argos said I "could contact them within 48 hours while they perform an investigation" but gave me no assurances of anything, and I now have to contact them again to make sure that they have cancelled the card and flagged it as fraud. Thankfully nothing has left my bank account so far and nothing else arrived today, but everyday now I'm expecting some other thing that I have to go out of my way to cancel, and now I can't even check the credit club to see if there's anything else. I don't have a credit card myself so I have no clue what I'm doing really and now I'm stuck just waiting.
  • Are they trying to open accounts using your card details? Speak to your bank and get any cards blocked and changed.
    ::A
  • Doesn't seem they are at the moment. Just my name, address and DOB. I'll be calling my bank to check and let them know today, but so far there's no suspicious activity regarding my bank account and no new direct debits or regular payments have shown up.
I'm waiting on a letter from NewDay that will hopefully give me more advice and information, but other than the above and calling Argos I'm just waiting for things to show up at the moment.

Have any of these companies put a CIFAS Cat 2 (Victim of ID Fraud) marker against your name? That should help stop any further fraudulent applications being successful.

If they haven't, then consider doing it yourself.

Also try registering with Karma and Clearscore to see your other credit files.

Yes, Debenhams flagged it and NewDay contacted me on their behalf, I then contacted them and they have put a CIFAS marker against my name. I'm not sure if Vodafone did the same or if they just put an internal fraud marker against my name, but they said that they had marked it as fraud. So I'm satisfied at least that it should stop any further fraud, it's just if there was anything else already in the works that hasn't turned up yet.

Thanks for the suggestion! I had a look at a page on from the MSE website about it yesterday, but got a little overwhelmed after discovering that I can't check through credit club. I still don't know what the problem is with that which is concerning me. But I'll check the others in the meantime. Thanks again!
