Tesco's (and other) petrol no longer 24 hour self service?
The petrol station at my local Tesco's in Devon has signs on the pumps stating that 'Our petrol station will be closing at 8 pm from now on due to petrol filling station legislation change'. I can't find any mention online of any change in the law for October 2019. The Tesco's website still shows the fuel as 24 hours. Can any forumites advise on what this change is, and how it affects 24 hour petrol self serve? I often use all night unstaffed petrol stations en route on long journeys (including the one at Tesco's Ashford), and don't want to get caught out if there has indeed been a nationwide change. Thanks.

I wonder if it's a local bylaw or licencing change surrounding minimum staffing levels for fire safety purposes. If it were national, you'd think it would be widely covered.0

I know that the Tesco Petrol At Queensferry (nr Edinburgh) did close the overnight availability some 2 years ago. This was quoted as local bylaws which did not permit unattended fuel dispensing.0

I haven't found it yet either, but the current rumour is that legislation has just come into force that either the site must be manned, or the CCTV must be monitored continuously, with a swift response time, we think it is in case of spillages.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The ASDA pump near me is completely unattended for all intents and purposes but if you need assistance there is a red telephone you can call which will get someone from the store to come and assist.
It might man the pump does not dispense fuel when the supermarket is shut on sunday early morning/evenigns.0 -
Don't count on Tesco Folkstone when crossing the channel. It closes at 23.00 now, even though it's advertised as open 24h.0

Thanks for these, I hadn't thought of local bylaws. I agree that were it national I would have expected to see wider coverage, so shall hope it's just Mid Devon Council being helpful as ever.0

My Tesco recently started closing by 8 pm, and I'm in the West Midlands, probably all of them that can't pay the wages of an attendant and still make a huge profit close overnight.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Same issue at Tesco Southam I was caught out and it caused a few worries until I got more fuel.
I asked the next time I was there and was told a new law?
This is really annoying and I can't find any proper explanation of what has changed...0 -
To be fair, I can see why the law has changed if it has - you’ve got dopey Joe Public dispensing an explosive fluid into their car.
Some supervision definitely needed!0
