Wireless connection with Laptop

I have look at the thread for wireless problems but not really sure what the problem is so wonder if anyone can help me...
I am trying to fix my bf's dad's laptop they have a wirelss connection for the pc and it also is used for the laptop and my boyfriends PS3, the pc and ps3 work no problem with it but when I am trying to get online using the laptop I am getting the message of Limited or no connectivity message and I am unable to go online I have tried to repair the problem but just keep getting the message that there is a problem with my IP address and to contact my provider who is BT and they are useless have had no luck with them what so ever.
can anyone suggest what I can do or what could be wrong with the laptop??
