So the issue of the car being a gift isn't relevant, despite what you said in your OP. You simply bought a car and added your girlfriend as an additional driver. Stick to that line with the card provider.

@phillw it is HPI clear - checked a few days ago. I doubt the car was ever undrivable, was probably just driven to a dodgy indie garage, bodged up and sold on.

Do not get it repaired until your card company has had the chance to request and review an independent report into its condition.

Earlier you wrote the following:-

But this still doesn't mean the issues were present at the time of the sale. In fact, it could be countered that this must mean they weren't present at the time of sale. Did you get the results of an RAC inspection when you bought the vehicle? - I would imagine that would be supplied as part of the sale documents.

I'm not trying to put up barriers for you, I'm just trying to anticipate problems that may crop up.
