So after allowing people to offer help, you explain that you have an oil boiler and a solid fuel back-boiler.
You only need to use an immersion heater for emergencies (as I am sure you already know).
I think that is called 'trolling'

    Most mundane troll ever.

I've tried not to confuse things by including information I thought was irrelevant.

Th immersion heater is the main source of hot water as neither the oil boiler and a solid fuel seem that effective and there is no cylinder stat to turn the oil boiler off when it reaches temperature.

My system uses an Injector Cross (Page 4 above link), tank stat/'Y' plan mid-position valve/room stat/2-pumps. The immersion heater has never been on.
If you are keeping your system for some years, revised pipework would pay for itself.

I have an oil boiler. And a stat on the side of the cylinder. Works perfectly, though I tend to use the immersion in the summer.

Sounds like your boiler is inefficient (needs replacing) or maybe the stat in the boiler is set too low. And you need to add a stat to the cylinder linked in to control the boiler. Get a decent plumber round to review your whole system.
